Preventive Services That Are Usually Free with Insurance
Most health insurance plans, including those that follow the Affordable Care Act (ACA), cover a variety of preventive services at no extra cost to you, as long as you go to a provider in your insurance network. These services are meant to help keep you healthy and catch problems early.
Common services include:
- Yearly Check-Ups (Routine Physicals) – A visit to check your overall health and talk about any risks or concerns.
- Vaccines – Shots like the flu shot, COVID-19 vaccine, tetanus, and more, depending on your age and health.
- Cancer Screenings – Tests like mammograms (for breast cancer), colonoscopies (for colon cancer), Pap smears and HPV tests (for cervical cancer), and others for people who qualify.
- Cholesterol, and Diabetes Checks – Tests to find out if you’re at risk for serious health problems.
- STI and HIV Tests – Screenings for sexually transmitted infections for those who need them.
- Prenatal Visitss – Check-ups and support for people who are pregnant, including vitamins like folic acid.
- Well-Child Visitss – Regular check-ups (and vaccines) for kids to measure growth and development.
- Mental Health Screeningss – Screenings for things like depression, often included in your regular doctor visits.
- Help to Quit Smoking – Support and medication to help you stop using tobacco.
These services are usually free when they are done for preventive reasons. If you talk to your doctor about other health problems during the same visit, or get extra tests or treatments, your insurance may charge you.
To be sure of what’s covered, please check with your insurance company or look at your benefits guide.
